About

Middleground Farm is located 3 miles west of Loveland and 5 miles south of Masonville, Colorado, on still-mostly-wild land that has been organically managed for decades.

Our gorgeous Front Range property is located on one of the hogbacks that comprise the famous Dakota Hogback that runs along the eastern edge of the Rockies. Our greenhouse is 5,300 feet above sea level.

What’s in a Name?

One day while goofing around with MapQuest, we realized that this property marks the halfway point between the West Coast and Midwest hospitals in which my husband and I, respectively, were born. This discovery birthed our farm’s name.

Energy-efficient Facilities

We are blessed with a two-story, wraparound passive solar greenhouse that not only allows us to produce food year-round, it gifts us with free heat in the winter. Indeed, we run the 2.5 acre farm on an average monthly energy bill of $105, including electricity, propane and wood.

High Quality Farm Products

We grow organic tea; culinary and medicinal herbs (think oregano, rosemary, aloe vera and arnica rather than cannabis); fruit; vegetables; broilers, layers and eggs; fish; honey and bee products.

Bees

We use essential oils and IPM protocol rather than chemicals to manage the health of our bees. We have planted an incredible array of bee friendly plants, all grown organically. Also, we are well within bee foraging distance of the national forest and Bobcat Ridge Open Space Park (where we have seen honey bees foraging, though who is to say for certain if indeed those were our bees).

Chickens

We never use antibiotics in our egg and meat chicken production. Ever. We use a locally sourced non-medicated feed plus plenty of grown on-site organic greens for both flocks. To manage chicken health, we use a homemade spice tonic, vinegar , diatomaceous earth and plenty of space.

Fish

We use beneficial bacteria, oyster shell and baking soda to maintain water quality. Never chemicals. In addition we grow and dry organic duckweed for our tilapia, augmenting that with a commercial feed. We look to move to an organic fish feed for the next cycle.

Why?

We grow organically and manage critters using non-toxic, non-chemical herbal solutions because this is our food we are talking about. We grow/forage 65-75% of our own food, and we aren’t about to spend that much time and energy if we couldn’t do a better, more responsible job than big ag while turning out great tasting meals with superior nutrition from scratch.

We offer high quality foodstuffs to the community so that you, too, can have a high caliber, responsibly farmed diet. And because we wish you perfect health.

Drying Facilities

In addition, we offer drying facilities for fresh picked herbs. When we have extras, we offer organic veggie starts for sale in mid-May.
